I rarely come across anyone with Meniere's and I rarely come across anyone with RA so to find someone on here with both got me thinking. I remember a while ago when researching Meniere's seeing something about it being possibly being caused by autoimmune diseases. Look what I found

Autoimmune Ear Disorders

To summarise I was diagnosed with 'unknown' form of arthritis in my knees in 1997/98, then in 1998 I left a job due to suspected RSI in wrists/hands/fingers. In 1999 the vertigo/tinnitus/ear pressure started and I was told it could be Meniere's. Then over the following years I had plantar fasciitis, a shoulder impingement , swelling/severe pain in toe joints (suspected gout) and vicious swelling and pain in thumbs, forefingers last year which moved and settled in my middle fingers.

I didn't get a firm diagnosis of Meniere's (bilateral) until last year, three months later I was told I had RA. What are the chances?

I never did follow the 'pattern' of Meniere's and was even called a hypochondriac by one consultant. I won't tell you what I called im in return Laugh Seriously though, it's all now beginning to make sense. I think the RA started in my knees (at the time I thought it was osteo but know better now! Osteo doesn't make your knees swell like watermelons and make them so hot you can fry eggs on them. The pain was incredible). Then it must have moved to my wrists/hands and then started attacking my ears before taking a nible at all the other joints over the following ten years.

The good news is that if they get my meds right there's a good chance it'll fix the 'meniere's' as wellSmile

That's very interesting Mairead.
Have you been on mtx yet? The anti-tnfs especially enbrel seem to give good results.
Here's hoping that your RA treatment will sort out your ears for you!

Interesting isn't it?

I've got Meniere's in both ears apparently. I don't follow the 'pattern' which is why it's been so hard to get a diagnosis. When it started in 99 I had all the classic symptoms of pressure in the ear, severe vertigo spells, tinnitus and I also had horrific headaches. I figured I had a brain tumour as one day I was walking up the street to the bus stop and somehow ended up in the road without realising I'd veered off. This continued all the way to the bus stop.

I've never had the classic 20minute+ vertigo spells thank God but had vicious 'shove' attacks wher it felt like someone had pushed me with all their strength. That would bring on some terrible vertigo spells and I'd go deaf for a few minutes. then in 2006 I had to start using a stick as I was careering around the place like a drunk.

But it wasn't until last year I got a firm diagnosis because I ended up taking three weeks off work because I could barely even get out of bed. I was convinced it was an inner ear infectino because my ear was in agony and I begged for antibiotics but I was farmed off to various hospital departments before being subject to another round of tests where they found that my right ear balance organs were only 50% as effective as my left ear. They were quite surprised just how dramatic the difference was and actualy wondered how i'd managed to cope al these years. I'd lost some bass hearing too and that confirmed the original Meniere's suspicion in 1999. I was a bit miserable when they said it was also in my left ear because up til that point I honestly thought it was a big fuss about an inner ear infection.

Still, at least it's not as bad as some but I do think there must be a correlation. I think now that's three on this board alone with RA and MD.

Apparently the singer of the Beautiful South has it too.

Me too, I read that it can also come with the Fibromyalgia, I've lost the hearing in my right ear. It can be useful if I sleep on that side when my husband is snoring. Glenys.

I heard about the singer too. It sounds like a horrible disease and I hope you are all under control now.

Funniest thing I ever read about Meniere's was some chap moaning about his tinnitus. He said it was so loud his wife could hear it Laugh Laugh Laugh

well i have tinatus in both ears loud with a noise like a tummble dryer going all the time non stop
Some people have 2 or more noises .Sometimes sounds like the wind .
I don,t know i have it as i live with it .(Learnt to live with it .)
slightley deaf but age means its alterd again my good ear is the worst one .Now .

The opp went hay wire i was meant to have a shunt put in .But Mr Moffett found a de formed bones and a odd looking middle ear So he ( top in world very luckey to have had him ) Put a hole in the scacis and coverd with strips off muscle i am speaking of something as small as a pin head .

since been fine balance fine before i would lose it compleatley and could not even hold my head it
called something and the veritio would chuck me on the floor .Was quite deaf at time that was 15 yrs ago
the opp tempory so i kept my hearing as the next one middle of ear coming out or nerves sevrerd to the brain then will have to wear an aid .

i used to also have something when i touched my head i would almost fall but only Addinbrookes Cambridge knew what i was talking about .So can be nasty .All gone now

But won,t kill you .

Christine

i also have menires and RA

add me to the list

my menieres started about 18 months ago

my tinnitus is like a high pitch constant tone then on occasion a 'siren' will apear from nowhere to join in

i'm struggling at work i think my hearing has altered in the last few months as any background noise at work makes it very difficult to hear names clearly

even at home i find myself asking people to repeat them selves
caz x

Hmmm, interesting, I have been complaining about balance problems for over a year. I had to have some drops to unblock my ears recently. Whenever I mention balance problems they look at me like I am mad!! my daughters always complain that I veer to one side when walking, and once have actually fallen over getting off a bus as balance just went. When I shower I have to hold onto something or I would fall over, nno ne seems to find this odd except me and my 2 girls!!Smile

I fell in the shower last year because of it so it can be dangerous. I ended up with two weeks off work with the damage. The noise in the ears does become another part to put up with and makes it more of a problem in company. On very odd times it will clear for a few seconds which is a lovely feeling.
